Celebration of the 206th College Foundation Day

Serampore College celebrated its 206th Foundation Day on 15th July, 2023 at Carey Library and Research Center (CLRC) auditorium. The celebration began with garlanding the busts of the great missionaries and founders of the college William Carey, William Ward and Joshua Marshman.

The First Session of the celebration, a thanksgiving session, was chaired by Dr. Vansanglura, Principal & CEO. He read Psalm 126:3 “The LORD has done great things for us, and we rejoiced.” Carey Choir beautifully sang “I know His voice” in Mizo, Khasi and English. Rev. Dr. Dipankar Haldar, Chaplain, shared devotional thought based on Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of God.”

As an academic institution, the second session of the celebration was devoted to lecture on the theme “Development of Serampore College from 1818 – 1918” delivered by Prof. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya, Department of Philosophy. He spoke of the multidimentional contribution of the missionaries, focussing their activities on the college. The lecture was both informational and thought provoking. He brought out many activities and initiatives of the founders hidden in history.

The third session, hosted by Mr. Joel S and Ms. V. Lalnghenchhani, was an entertaining cultural programme. Students from both ASC and Theology entertained the gatherings with varied cultural performances ranging from indian classical music to Bengali folk song to Malayali dance to fusion of dances of the rainy season to Naga traditional cock-fighting dance to Sambalpuri song.

The celebration concluded with a football match between ASC and Theology. The thrilling match ended with a 2 – 0 win by ASC team.

Inaugural Programme of SCMI: Serampore College Unit

As is the tradition, the Student Christian Movement of India: Serampore College Unit organized inaugural programme for the year 2023-2024 on July 14, 2023 at Carey Library and Research Center auditorium at 8:00 PM.

Rev. Dr. Subhro Sekhar Sircar, Vice-Principal, Serampore College: Faculty of Theology, who graced the occasion as Guest of Honour spoke on the theme “Practicing Justice.

He said, “Practicing justice is to actively lived out the Gospel values.” He further said that to practice justice is to live out God’s principal character.

The inaugural programme is a kick off for all the activities if SCMI: Seramoore College Unit. The unit is actively involved in various social movements, reaching the unreached with the hope to uplift and make them feel loved. Such involvement is a translation of the Christian faith into praxis.

Student Christian Movement of India, Serampore College Unit started its operation with the inaugural program on 14th July, 2023, with the theme PRACTICING JUSTICE. The theme was reflected with different presentations by each classes.

The committee members comprises class representatives from every classes. Mr. Madda John Ananayya, PG. Mr. Lanamio Syad, BD IV. Mr. Beirasei Laikhai, BD lll. Ms. Rongsenbenla, BD ll. Mr. Chimata Sailesh Paul,  BD l. We are also blessed with having National leader among us. Mr. Joel S, BD III is selected for one of the Student Vice Chair Persons of SCMI.”

We are proud and feel extremely privileged to receive “Ananda Shiksha Ratna 2023” at ABP Ananda Shikhsa Samman 2023 and thankful to ABP ANANDA for recognizing and felicitating Serampore College with this award. It is indeed a proud moment for the whole Serampore College community and we are thrilled to share with you all that our persistent efforts have been recognized and rewarded.The Award, given for excellence in education, was presented on 8th June, 2023 in a glittering ceremony at Rangmanch, Swabhumi, Kolkata. Dr. Vansanglura, Principal & CEO of Serampore College received the award.The award was presented by the educationist and historian, Professor Sugata Bose, the Gardiner Professor of History at Harvard University, USA.

Serampore College was established by the famous trio of Baptist Missionaries, William Carey, Joshua Marshman and William Ward in July 1818 to impart quality education in Arts, Science and Commerce as well as in Christian Theology and completed 200 years academic excellence in 2018.

The Serampore Trio played pivotal roles in various aspects of Bengal Renaissance, such as the fight for the abolition of Sati, against infanticide and for women’s education. The Baptist Mission Press in Serampore nurtured the first printed word in the history of Asia and is the birthplace of modern Bengali prose. Since then, the College has strived to live up to this legacy. Not only has it consistently done well in University exams, but continued to contribute handsomely in research and related academic fields. Further, it has also been socially responsible through community kitchen during the Covid period and founding and running the William Carey Pathsala in Jangalgheri, Patharpratima (Sunderban) for under privileged children. College is affiliated to the University of Calcutta for Arts Science Commerce Department to run diversified post graduate, under graduate, diploma and certificate courses. From the beginning, it was not only a centre of education, but played a central role in societal change in reform in Bengal and India.

This award brings honour and opens door to more success in future. It is the combined efforts of all the stakeholders of Serampore College that the College has been recognized with such a prestigious award. We will continue with perseverance and set a benchmark for ourselves.May we keep climbing new heights of success!
